Coyote Crew began when I moved a host of wood and metal instruments out to beautiful hemlock grove deep in the woods. Balaphones, bells, gongs, tubes, shakers... I wasn't playing them inside my home and they had been begging for years to be played, so I brought them to the woods where I could play them after my trail running. They could also be played by anyone who discovered them or knew they were there. I found out later that a similar project was done over the summer in NYC with pianos.
One full moon Friday evening in early July, I invited a cadre of good friends to join me in my musical cavortions. Just as we set up the grove and began playing, a group of coyotes started to howl a wild and long song on the other side of the trees. We all fell silent and huddled around the fire. It was humbling, spine chilling, and awesomely beautiful. We have gone out four times since then, usually on full moon nights. I have recorded every bit of it and mixed the proceedings into an initial Coyote Crew CD: "Howling for You" Look for it in CD stores and listen for it out in the woods.
